REEDS Ocean Navigator
The Ocean Navigator is intended as a working reference book for navigators of craft of all sizes, but particularly for those whose work takes them on international or offshore voyages.
In this Third Edition, the successful general format of previous editions has been retained but the opportunity has been taken to amend some of the content to keep abreast of changing requirements. Also, some items have been deleted and others added in order that the Ocean Navigator shall become complementary to, rather than overlapping with, Nautical Almanacs and particularly with REED’s Nautical Almanac. Unlike the Almanacs which are issued annually, the new edition of the Ocean Navigator is expected to remain current for several years/
Compared with the Second Edition, an important change has been the adoption of metric units throughout, although imperial units have, in most sections, also been included.
The short method sight reduction tables have been deleted and are replaced by instructions for using hand held calculators for the solution of both astronomical and great circle problems. Tables of natural sines, consines and tangents, arranged so that all three functions of an angle can be obtained from a single entry, are included especially to facilitate the use of simple four function calculators for navigational applications.
The distance tables, previously limited to Australasia, have now been replaced by world-wide tables.
My thanks are due, not only to the many people who have helped with the preparation of this Third Edition, but also to all those associated with the previous editions whose work laid such excellent foundations.
