For many years the basic source book for lifeboatmen and able seamen was CG-175, a small handbook issued by the U.S. Coast Guard, that is now long out of date. “The Cornell Manual” was prepared to take its place and to continue the tradition of service to those young men and women who choose to follow the sea. It is based upon the older book in that it contains the official requirements for certificates of service for the several ratings. The well-illustrated “Cornell Manual” contains sample multi-choice questions and answers for both the lifeboatman and able seaman examinations. The authors, William B. Hayler, John M. Keever and Paul M. Seiler, who are all seasoned mariners, are on the faculty of the California Maritime Academy.
