The Future of Navigation Starts Now with MORBAI

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has approved amendments to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) mandating the fitting of Electronic Chart Display Information System (ECDIS) at the 86th session of the Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) in June 2009. The amendment to SOLAS means that all large passenger, tanker, and cargo ships will be obliged to fit ECDIS on a rolling timetable that begins in July 2012. As the mandation draws much nearer, apparent measures need to be implemented to prepare the maritime industry for the future of navigation.

MORBAI Charts/Maps and Maritime Supplies, the established #1 Distributor of Navigational Charts and Maritime Publications of national & international waters in the Philippines, spearheaded the realization of this evident future. In cooperation with the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO), the maker of British Admiralty products, MORBAI hosted a unique and exclusive business conference that discussed the implications of ECDIS Mandation in the Philippine Maritime Industry. Aptly titled: FUTURE OF NAVIGATION – PHILIPPINES, the conference was held last 8th November 2010 at the Century Park Hotel, Manila at 10am. The attendees came from the National Mapping & Resource Information Authority (NAMRIA), Commission on Higher Education (CHED), Filipino Association for Mariners’ Employment (FAME), Filipino Ship Owners Association, Maritime Executives, Top Shipping Companies in the Philippines, and other government agencies.

Mr. Luisito Morante – Head of Marketing and Business Development of MORBAI, worked together with UKHO and with other keynote speakers in Hong Kong in developing a robust conference agenda.

Spoke at the event, Mr. Guy Edwards – International Sales Manager of UKHO said: “UKHO is committed to ensuring the move towards ECDIS mandation is as straightforward as possible.  We are doing that by providing the global Electronic Navigational Charts (ENC) coverage the market needs. The Admiralty brand offers the most extensive ENC coverage available.  If the ENCs have been produced, we have them in the Admiralty Vector Chart Service (AVCS).”

Another keynote speaker, Mr. Simon Gliddon – International Account Executive of UKHO added: “Significant new content produced recently by UKHO includes key coverage of the Asia-Europe trade lane that isn’t available in any other ENC service in the market. This business conference organized by MORBAI gives UKHO a voice within the Philippine market and enable us to demonstrate our continuing commitment to supporting this vital region for world trade.”

Mr. Santiago Morante – President and General Manager of MORBAI, was equally passionate with the past event: “All of us at MORBAI were very excited to host the unique conference. The Future of Navigation – Philippines, attests to the long-standing commitment of MORBAI to its customers and government agency partners. With 34 years of service, this event marks MORBAI’s continuous support to the Philippine Maritime Industry.
